Draw Regulations

Seeding

□ All Majors, USPA 1000’s, 500’s and 100’s will seed according to the following criteria:

j A team’s combined USPA point total from the combined 12-month rolling ranking at the close of registration.

j Consideration will be given to players and teams who possess international rankings with FIP and other national federations.

  • Note: Tournament committees shall aim to be as rigid as possible in the application of such guidance.

j Note: In the event an internationally recognized player has a domestic pawner, the ranking of the domestic pawner shall also be considered whether to seed that team. The perceived ability of the player is irrelevant and should not be taken into consideration.

J Note: An internationally recognized player is someone who maintains a current international ranking. A ranking from 2018, 2014, 2004, etc. is not considered a current ranking.

  • Note: Seeding criteria has been a point of contention amongst players, tournament directors and the USPA. Some believe the best teams deserve seeding preference and others believe the highest ranked teams deserve preference. Ideally, the best teams will be the highest ranked teams and vice versa. If the best teams are not the highest ranked teams, it is because the ranking system is flawed and/or the best players are not sufficiently participating to achieve the highest rankings. In conclusion, it is the USPA’s stance that the problem is not with the seeding criteria but with the rankings and player participation. Furthermore, seeding according to USPA rankings is more objective because the point totals are transparent for all to see whereas the opinions of tournament committees concerning player ability is not. The latter leads to accusations of bias(2nd unfairness which have historically been directed at the USPA.

Draw Regulations

Draws

  • Byes are to be placed in the draw after the seeds.

j Any non-seeded team awarded a Bye shall be done so at random, not by placement.

  • All non-seeded teams are to be drawn into their positions in the bracket.

□ The act of placing non-seeded teams in the bracket other than by random draw is prohibited.

  • The highest ranked non-seeded team and the lowest ranked non-seeded team are managed the exact same for draw purposes: as non-seeded.

J Note: The ‘best’ team may also be a non-seeded team. If this happens to be the case and they are drawn to play the number one seed first round, then they play the number one seed first round. The players may not like this but draws are meant to maintain some level of randomness. Seeded teams are not entitled to a ‘gooddraw’every tournament, but they are entitled to not play other seeded teams until later in the tournament. The draw regulations are consistent with FIP, WPT, ATP and USTA and the US PA does not see a need to conduct the drawing process in a different manner.

  • Further instructions on how to place Byes and non-seeded teams in the draw are outlined in the USPA Handbook.

2021 Point Allocations

Allocation Summary

J Points allocated by division and draw size.

J A first-round loser in Competition gains more points than the Advanced winner. This is the same result for a first- round loser in Advanced and the winner of Intermediate.

J Clear motivation for players to enter higher divisions to ensure more points earned.

j More points are allocated for larger draws:

J 1-8 teams: 128 points to the winner

  • 9-16 teams: 160 points to the winner
  • 17+ teams: 192 points to the winner
  • There is no difference in allocation if there are nine teams or 16 but there is a difference in allocation if there are nine teams instead of eight.
  • This creates problems when teams sign up after the deadline or withdraw after the draw has been created. Eight teams can go to nine or nine teams can go to eight and there is no clear solution on how to award points.

J USPA believes an incremental increase in point allocations should mirror an incremental increase in teams.

2022 Point Allocations

Details

  • Allocations are based on draw size. 100%-point allocation will be awarded for the following:
  • Men’s divisions: 16+ teams
  • Women’s divisions: 12+ teams

J Note: 100%-point allocation for the US PA Finals is based on eight teams and non-USPN Majors are based on 12 teams.

  • The percentage allocation for draws with fewer than 16 men’s teams and 12 women’s teams:
  • Men: x / 16 = allocation percentage
  • Women: x / 12 = allocation percentage
  • Example: 12 teams sign up for Men’s Open and six teams sign up fbr Women’s Open:
  • Men’s Open allocation: 12 / 16 = 75%
  • Women’s Open allocation: 6 / 12 = 50%

Teams must win a match in the front draw in order to earn front draw points. If a team receives a bye and/or loses their first match, they will receive back draw points.

Example: Women’s Open Allocation: 6 / 12 = 50%

The Rankings

Yearly Ranking and 12-Month Rolling Ranking

J Each division allocates the same number of points.

J Two sets of rankings are maintained:

  • One for each division maintained on a 12-month rolling cycle (divisional rankings). Only points earned within the division will count for that division’s rankings.
  • Will be used to select players for all Tier 1 events.
  • One set of combined rankings that is maintained on a 12-month rolling cycle.
  • Points earned in Men’s and Women’s Open retain 100% value

j Points earned in Men’s and Women’s First Division retain 20% of value.

  • Points earned in Men^s Second Division retain 4% value.

j Will be used to seed players for all Tier 1 events.

Best of Seven

j A player’s best seven tournaments will count towards their yearly ranking and 12-month rolling ranking.

  • Utilizing a tournament limit to calculate rankings is consistent with the WPT, FIP, ATP and USTA.
